Software Troubleshooting Guide

Thank you for investing in software by Astro Communications Services.  We have worked hard to bring you the very best astrology software.

All ACS software has been rigorously tested before being released to the public.  However, it is impossible to test the software with every possible hardware and/or software configuration available, so every now and then one of our programs may do something unexpected.

If you are experiencing any difficulties with your software, please take a moment to read through this troubleshooting guide.

The two most common solutions...

Tip #1 - Some components of ACS software may not function properly after installation until the computer has been restarted.  This is the most common cause of the software not working properly immediately after installation.  If you are not sure if your machine was restarted after installing the software, please restart your machine now and then try the software again.

Tip #2 - We regularly release free updates to all ACS software.  These updates may add new features and functionality, or they may correct errors that were discovered after the program was released.  If you are experiencing a problem with your software, be sure to visit our website for the latest updates.  Even if you are not experiencing any difficulties, it is a good idea to keep your software up to date so you can take advantage of the latest features.

If you have tried the two steps listed above and are still experiencing problems, the next step is to browse through the troubleshooting guide below.

8.

9.

Bold/italic words misplaced on report printout.

10.

"Unexpected File Format" error.

11. Canceling birth data dialog causes program to stop responding.
12. I followed this guide and my software is still broken.

1. If you receive the error "...is an invalid Win32 application."

There are two ways to fix this error.  Either reinstall the program from the original CD, or apply the latest update from the ACS website.  See the installation instructions included with your CD or Tip #2 above for more information.

2.

Chart wheel shows symbols instead of sign/planet glyphs.

First, be sure you have restarted your computer after installation. (See Tip #1 above for more information.)

If you still have this problem after restarting, you will need to manually install the glyph font following these instructions:

  1. Close all open programs.

  2. Insert your Electronic Astrologer or Lucky Times CD.

  3. If the install menu appears, close it.

  4. Open the Control Panel.

  5. If using Windows XP, select "Switch to Classic View" from the left sidebar menu.

  6. Open the Fonts item in the Control Panel.

  7. Select the File menu in the Fonts window.

  8. Select the Install New Font option from the File menu.

  9. On the Install New Font screen you will see a drop-down menu labeled Drive.  From this menu, select the letter associated with your CD-ROM drive.  (Typically, this is Drive D; consult your manual or computer vendor for more information.)

  10. When the proper drive is selected, you will see a list of items in the Folders box.  Double-click the Horoscope folder. (Note: If you have a Lucky Times CD, you should double-click the NT folder.)

  11. Now, the Glyphs font will appear in the list of fonts.  Click the Glyphs font once, so that it is highlighted.

  12. Click the OK button

  13. Close all open windows.

  14. Restart your computer.

  15. Now you will be able to see the proper glyphs in your charts.

3.

Program calculates improper sun sign using unknown birth time.

Certain early versions of Electronic Astrologer software would not calculate proper charts when using birth data with an unknown birth time.  Apply the latest software update.  (See Tip #2 above.)

4.

Hard to read gray/yellow/other faded color text from printouts.

First, make sure you have applied the latest software update.  This will ensure you have the most color setting options.  (See Tip #2 above.)

If you want to print in black & white:  Go to the View menu of the Electronic Astrologer and select Colors.  Make sure the checkbox labeled Print Black & White is checked.

If you want to print in color, but want to change a specific color to make it more readable:  Go to the View menu of the Electronic Astrologer and select Colors.  Either select a predefined color scheme by clicking one of the buttons (such as Black or Aqua) or select a specific color you wish to change from the list on the left (such as Air or Fire.)

If you have selected a specific color to change, adjust the three color slider until you have a color you like.  For example, to change the color for Air from light yellow to orange, first select Air from the list on the left.  Then, move the red slider to the right (255), set the green slider in the middle (127) and set the blue slider to the left (0).  Click OK when you have finished your color selections.

5.

Don't like the color/font/other setting?

From the View menu of the Electronic Astrologer you have access to many options that configure how your program will operate.

Additionally, it is a good idea to make sure you have access to latest features and options by applying the most recent software update.  (See Tip #2 above.)

6.

Printing creates a list of names rather than a chart/report.

The Print function on the File menu will print a list of all birth data stored in the open birth data file.  If you wish to print a report, either use the Print function in the Reports menu, or click the printer icon on the toolbar.

7.

Chart missing/broken when viewing an RTF report in MS Word.

When viewing a report file in Microsoft Word, be sure to select Print Layout from the View menu.

Additionally, if you have Office 97 or MS Word 97, make sure you have the latest software update.  RTF files created with earlier versions of the Electronic Astrologer programs may not work properly with the Word or Office 97.  (See Tip #2 above for more info on updating your software.)

8.

Chart missing from report when written to a text file.

Due to limitations in the file formats available to the Electronic Astrologer, it is not possible to see a chart when printing to a TXT file.  Further, when printing to an RTF file, you will only see the chart when using Microsoft Word or a compatible product.  Using Notepad or WordPad, you will not see the proper chart graphic.

9.

Bold/italic words misplaced on report printout.

Earlier versions of Electronic Astrologer did not print properly to certain printers.  Apply the latest software update as per Tip #2 above.

10.

"Unexpected File Format" error.

In rare instances a user who owns older versions of the Electronic Astrologer software will receive this error.

Note:  These instructions assume you have installed the software in the default location.  If you changed this option during the installation, you will need to adjust these steps to reflect the proper path to the program.

If you need to search for the installed location, you can use the find function on the start menu and search your local drives for a file named "eanatal", "eafuture" or "earelate", depending on whether you are looking for the Horoscope, Future, or Romance program, respectively.

  1. Close all open programs.

  2. Click the Start Menu.

  3. Select the Run option from the start menu.

  4. Copy the following command line into the Run window. Choose the proper command based upon the software with which you are having the problem, and the tint of your Electronic Astrologer CD:

Purple (July 2004)
Red or Blue
Horoscope
Horoscope
c:\program files\acs\natal\eanatal /f
c:\acs_ea\natal\eanatal /f

Future

c:\program files\acs\future\eafuture /f
c:\acs_ea\future\eafuture /f
Purple (July 2004)
Red or Blue
Romance
Romance
c:\program files\acs\romance\earomance /f
c:\acs_ea\romance\earomance /f
  1. Click OK.

  2. The software should start normally.

  3. Select the File menu in the software.

  4. Select the Save As option.

  5. Select the name of the file you currently have open.  If you are not sure which file you have open, check the title bar along the top of the the software window; the file name will be shown there.

  6. Select OK to overwrite the file.

  7. Close the software.

  8. Reopen the software using your normal shortcut and verify that everything is working ok.

11. Canceling birth data dialog causes program to stop responding.

Certain early versions of Electronic Astrologer software would stop responding if a user enters invalid birth data and then tries to cancel the birth data dialog.  Apply the latest software update.  (See Tip #2 above.)
